She was born in Copenhagen but spent her childhood in Bangalore. She studied from Sophia High School which is located in Bangalore and from Mount Carmel College. She quite her Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Indira Gandhi National Open University due to the scheduling clashes with her modelling career.

Her other movies include Yeh Jawani hai Deewani (2013), Chennai Express (2013), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmavat (2018) . Her exceptional acting in Ram-Leela (2013) in which she worked with Ranveer Singh and Piku (2015) in which she worked alongside Irfan Khan brought her two filmfare awards for best actress. She has also played a role in a Hollywood movie XXX: Return Of the Xander Cage (2017).

Ranbir Kapoor cheated on her and they broke up because of it. After some years she started a relationship with Ranveer Singh which turned into their marriage in November 2018 at Lake Como, Italy.
